The primary role of the Sacristan is to be responsible for preparing the altar for the celebration of Mass. This includes setting up altar linens, lighting candles, putting out the sacred vessels, setting up liturgical books used for Mass, and preparing offertory gifs. For Masses with special celebrations, like Baptisms, other setup activities are necessary. The Sacristan also ensures all participants of the Mass, from Altar Servers to Lectors to Eucharistic Ministers, are present and prepared. After the celebration of Mass, the Sacristan returns liturgical items to their storage places.
