2024 Lenten Catechesis:
Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It’s a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ’s will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ’s death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ. (Text: USCCB)
Rich and inspiring catechesis can enhance your faith journey, especially during the season of Lent, when we see so many of the fundamental aspects of our Catholic faith play out during Mass. Through the Gospels, music and prayer selections, as well as the Rites and Scrutinies our Catechumens and Elect participate in, we are remined of our Baptism and Christ’s Sacrifice being our salvation. Throughout Lent, join the friars of the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe as they reflect on the Gospel for each Sunday of Lent from the Franciscan lens. These videos prayerfully explore how Franciscan spirituality links with the Gospel’s impact on today’s society.
Second Sunday of Lent
This week’s video highlights the Transfiguration, and how each of us must commit to the challenge of embracing the fact that we are made in the image of the Transfigured Christ.
Third Sunday of Lent
This week’s video highlights the Cleansing of the Temple, and how that relates to living as the “mirror of perfection,” something St. Francis of Assisi was often characterized as doing.
Fourth Sunday of Lent
This week’s reflection highlights John’s Gospel with Jesus meeting Nicodemus, and offers a consoling perspective for those who characterize God as malicious, stating that Jesus was sent by His Father out of love.
Fifth Sunday of Lent
This week’s reflection comes from Br. Roger Lopez, OFM, who suggests we are presented a few paradoxes with the John’s Gospel describing Jesus’ coming hour. “Here’s Jesus who says –”unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain…” – so He’s talking about death and life, and then He continues on with these paradoxes…that you would think don’t make sense, but illustrate the beauty and power of our faith.”
Easter Flowers
Every Easter, parishioners donate flowers in the memory of their loved ones to assist the parish in decorating the sanctuary for our celebration of the Risen Lord. In addition to the donated flowers adorning the sanctuary, the names of those we remember will be added to a digital memorial that will be available on the parish website throughout the Easter season. Click here to view the 2024 Easter Season Digital Memorial.
Lenten Stations of the Cross
Lenten Stations of the Cross are held every Friday during Lent, beginning Friday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the church. Following the Way of the Cross by praying at each of these stations is a devotional practice that has been promoted by Franciscans since the 14th century. Each prayer session will be lead by a different ministry of the parish, and may feature varying emphasis or points of view. Make this part of your Lenten journey and join us!
Parking for the Easter Triduum
Those attending Mass for the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, March 30, or Easter Sunday, March 31, are welcome to park in the neighboring Madison Building garage free of charge, as a courtesy to our parish and parishioners. You must provide the attendant proof of Mass attendance utilizing a copy of the Easter bulletin upon exit. Street level parking within the City of Tampa’s “church zone” also remains a free option on Easter Sunday.
There are no free parking options available for Holy Thursday, March 28, or Good Friday, March 29. Should you choose to utilize the Madison Building garage on these days, the standard daily rate will apply.
We thank our friends at the Madison Building for making our celebrations of Easter that much more convenient for our parishioners.
